MPLS Label Stack Encoding
نویسندگان
چکیده
"Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS)" [1] requires a set of procedures for augmenting network layer packets with "label stacks", thereby turning them into "labeled packets". Routers which support MPLS are known as "Label Switching Routers", or "LSRs". In order to transmit a labeled packet on a particular data link, an LSR must support an encoding technique which, given a label stack and a network layer packet, produces a labeled packet. This document specifies the encoding to be used by an LSR in order to transmit labeled packets on Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) data links, on LAN data links, and possibly on other data links as well. On some data links, the label at the top of the stack may be encoded in a different manner, but the techniques described here MUST be used to encode the remainder of the label stack. This document also specifies rules and procedures for processing the various fields of the label stack encoding.

متن کاملExploring the trade-off between label size and stack depth in MPLS Routing
Multiprotocol Label Switching or MPLS technology is being increasingly deployed by several of the largest Internet service providers to solve problems such as traffic engineering and to offer IP services like Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). In MPLS, the analysis of the packet (network layer) header is performed just once, and each packet is assigned a stack of labels, which is examined by subs...
متن کاملEncapsulating MPLS in IP or Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE)
Various applications of MPLS make use of label stacks with multiple entries. In some cases, it is possible to replace the top label of the stack with an IP-based encapsulation, thereby enabling the application to run over networks that do not have MPLS enabled in their core routers. This document specifies two IP-based encapsulations: MPLS-in-IP and MPLS-in-GRE (Generic Routing Encapsulation). ...
متن کاملA Fast Algorithm based on the MPLS Label Stack for the Label Space Reduction Problem
Traffic Engineering objective is to optimize network resources utilization. Although several works have been published about minimizing network resource utilization in MPLS networks, few of them have been focused in LSR label space reduction. This work presents a online algorithm that aims to reduce the label space by means of the label stack. Our previous work [ICC2005][ISCC2005] states that u...
متن کاملTraveling with a Pez Dispenser (Or, Routing Issues in MPLS)
A new packet routing model proposed by the Internet Engineering Task Force is MultiProtocol Label Switching, or MPLS [B. Davie and Y. Rekhter, MPLS: Technology and Applications, Morgan Kaufmann (Elsevier), New York, 2000]. Instead of each router’s parsing the packet network layer header and doing its lookups based on that analysis (as in much of conventional packet routing), MPLS ensures that t...
